How to Overcome the Negative Impact of Criticism

It’s been said that it takes five positive, encouraging comments or interactions to overcome the negative impact of just one harsh, critical comment or interaction. Especially if it’s from someone who’s opinion matters to you. There’s actually some science to back that up.

When you get hit with negative comments and interactions your body releases a hormone called cortisol.  It’s the “fight or flight” aka “the stress hormone” that comes in very handy if you need it in an emergency.  It puts you in a defensive “protect yourself” mode. But too much of it built up over time can have a negative impact on your body.

On the other hand, there’s a hormone called oxytocin that is released when you have trusting, encouraging, warm connections with people.  Like when someone you love and respect gives you a sincere compliment.

But here’s the thing: cortisol takes longer for your body to metabolise than oxytocin does.  Think of cortisol like velcro and oxytocin like teflon.  And that’s why stressful criticisms stick around longer and have more negative impact than compliments and positive interactions.  So, fill your life with  positive, trusting, affirming interactions with good folks you love and care about. And do the same for them. Then the inevitable negatives that will come from others will have less lasting impact on your emotions.
