Transformative Treasures that Cost You Nothing

Our 22 year old daughter Julia was having emergency gallbladder surgery.  After receiving a call at 4:30 in the morning from her, suffering a debilitating attack, we were 10 hours in the ER before she was finally admitted.

None of us had eaten all day. Julia could only have clear liquids, but I headed over to Chick-fil-A to grab something for my wife Jeannie and me. The young 20-something employee behind the counter was named Logan. He was the quintessential Chick-fil-A employee. Very polite. He asked me if I had anything going on today, so I told him that I was here picking up food for my wife and me because our daughter was in the hospital having surgery the next day. Logan expressed genuine concern and wished my daughter well.

A few minutes later he brought my food out to me along with a cup of ice cream which I had not ordered. He said he just wanted to give it to me because my daughter was in the hospital.  His kindness, especially at such a stressful time, was palpable.

In an era when it’s tough for employers to find good young employees who truly care about their customers and who go the extra mile, Logan is one of those rare finds that bosses treasure.

What Logan did not know is that I know his boss Brian personally. He had hired me to perform my magic and mentalism show for him and his staff a few years prior.  So, before I left the restaurant I emailed his boss and told him what Logan had done and that he was a gem of an employee. Brian wrote me back and absolutely agreed with me. I responded that I hoped he would share my email with Logan to encourage him.  I’ll bet Logan will, like his boss Brian, be running his own restaurant someday.

We’re all familiar with Chick-fil-A employees completing an order with, “My pleasure.”  This time, it was my pleasure to be served by a stellar employee and have the opportunity to pass my thanks on to his boss. In turn, can you imagine the positive impact those words had on Logan when Brian passed them on to him?

Our words are valuable, powerful treasures we can invest in others. They cost us nothing but are priceless when they land in the hearts of the recipients.  Today and every day let’s watch for opportunities to invest our treasures in others.
